Arts & Media
Welcome to our world of process art where we have created an environment for children to be engaged, successful, and enthusiastic about their next creative adventure.
Ann Vancho, Arts and Media Specialist, works with each class on various skills that emphasize the use of both hands when approaching any activity from reaching for an object to crumpling or tearing paper. Every lesson is designed for the level of experience the children have had with a specific media, as Mrs. Vancho encourages individualized skills development such as hand/eye coordination, using scissors, paint and brushes.
Strengthening and working with small muscles is critical to developing good handwriting skills: pressing on a crayon to make a color bright, cutting with scissors*, and control of paint brushes is all a part of small motor development. *Cutting with scissors is especially important and should be done with both hands: You can help to reinforce this skill, by sitting individually with your child, with hands over theirs, and cut a line together.
Our activities so far have been:
- “Two-by-Two” and 2½ year olds have made cornstarch playdough.
- Three year olds have practiced their cutting and have completed two activities to strengthen their hands.
- Four year olds learned how to follow three step directions, they drew, cut, and glued (teacher directed) their own paper collage of what FPCNS looks like to them!. These collages are proudly displayed throughout the nursery school.
As we build on each child’s strength, everyone feels successful as we continue to build confidence and self-esteem through challenging experiences. I look forward to the wonderful art adventures, that this program can offer every child.
