What is that link to last Sunday's sermon?

The link to last Sunday's sermon, at the bottom of the left-hand column, is what's called a feed. Feeds are something relatively new on the Web. When you subscribe to the FPCG sermons feed, you'll be able to see at a glance whether a new sermon has been posted, and you can hear the new sermon without visiting our audio archive at FPCG.org. The feed is also accessible to handheld devices, like the iPod® and Blackberry®. This wide availability means you can hear a new sermon every week even when you're traveling and away from your computer.

Do I have to use the feed to hear this week's sermon?

No. The RSS feed is only one option out of three. If you don't have and don't want an RSS feed reader, you can subscribe to our weekly sermons at iTunes. Or you can listen to any of our sermons in Real® streaming audio at our online Sermon Archive. Just like the RSS and iTunes feeds, the archive is updated weekly. But, unlike the feeds, the online archive offers up to two years of recorded FPCG sermons, many transcribed to pdf format.

How do I use the feed?

To use the link, you need a gizmo called a feed reader that can read files presented in RSS 2.0 (Really Simple Syndication) format.

Handhelds (iPod®, Blackberry®, etc.)

  • Many handheld devices come with a feed reader installed. If your handheld does not include a feed reader, you may be able to download and install one designed for your particular device (search the Web for podcast [name of your device]). Then follow the manufacturer's directions.

Laptops and Desktops

  • Upgrade your browser and get a free feed reader. The good news is that the most recent versions of Internet Explorer®, Safari®, Netscape®, Mozilla®, Firefox®, and Opera® browsers (all free) come with built-in feed readers. Just install the latest version of one of those browsers and you're all set. Then, when you click on the link to last Sunday's sermon, you'll see a page with a link that allows you to hear the sermon – Internet Explorer will download the entire sermon before playing it on Windows Media Player; the others will stream the sermon (play it while it downloads) via Quicktime. More, you'll be offered a chance to subscribe to the FPCG sermons feed. If you decide to subscribe, a link to each Sunday's recorded sermon will come to your browser automatically every week. All you'll need to do is open your bookmarks, favorites, or feed folder, depending on which browser you use, and there you'll find a link to hear the latest FPCG sermon.
  • Get a reader without upgrading your browser. If you'd rather not upgrade and still want instant access to the latest FPCG sermon, you'll need to download and install a feed reader (search the Web for rss feed reader). Which one is your choice. Some integrate themselves into your browser and some stand alone. With most browser-integrated feed readers, you will be able to hear the latest sermon, and subscribe to the sermon feed, by dragging the feed icon (the square orange icon at the bottom of the left-hand links) into the area on your screen opened by your reader. This option poses difficulties for blind users and others who navigate via keyboarding, so we recommend they use the browser-upgrade option outlined above.

May I put a link to the FPCG sermon feed (RSS file) on my own website?

Certainly! We're happy for you to provide your users with direct access to a new FPCG sermon each week.

May I put a link to a specific sermon (mp3 file) on my own website?

We'd rather you didn't. A single sermon cannot represent the diversity of ideas or depth of faith at FPCG. More importantly, different sermons speak to different needs: some provide comfort, while others provoke change. So we'd prefer that you link to our feed. Doing so will ensure that a new sermon will be available each week. If you wish to link to our sermons without using the feed, we recommend that you link to our always up-to-date sermon archive at www.fpcg.org/sermons-archive.html.

Be aware that each speaker retains a natural copyright to his or her sermon. Except as allowable under current U.S. copyright law, alteration or republication of any FPCG sermon is prohibited without its author's express permission.
