Jesus. . . took a
little child and put it by his side, and said to them, "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever
welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the
greatest."
Luke 9:47-48
Following Jesus' example, we welcome children of all ages to
First Presbyterian Church. We seek to teach them
about God's love through a variety of programs and activities.
Children in Worship
We welcome children of all ages to join us in worship at any time.
Children's Worship bulletins and crayons are available from the ushers.
During the Church School year, children ages 5 and up are especially invited to
attend the first 15 minutes of the worship service with their parents. During
this first part of the worship service, a children's sermon is offered
designed especially for them.
At the conclusion of the children's sermon (roughly 10:15 a.m.), the children
will be excused to attend their regular church school classes. A designated
volunteer will be available following the children's sermon to take the
Kindergarten Children across the street to Collyer Center, or parents of
Kindergarten Children may, if they wish, take them there themselves.
Immediately following the service, parents should pick up their children from
their classrooms. We encourage children to join their parents for refreshments
during social hour.
Sunday Morning Programs for Children and Youth
Infant/Toddler Care (children less than 2 years old) is provided in the
main church building for infants and toddlers of parents attending the worship
service. The Infant/Toddler Room opens at 9:30 a.m.
and is staffed by professional caregivers that provide a safe and fun environment
for the children. In dropping off a child, parents should bring a fully supplied
diaper bag, including bottles and snacks as appropriate. Beepers are available
for parents to take with them during the worship service so that they can be
contacted if needed.
The Two-, Three-, and Four-Year-Olds participate in a rich and varied
Church School Program at Collyer Center. The
two-year-olds learn from songs and interactive play, through The Hands-On
Bible curriculum. The three- and four-year-olds are taught from the
Covenant People curriculum, providing them with lesson-related crafts
and a handout for parents. All the children enjoy free play, snack, and, weather
permitting, time to play on our Nursery School playground. Beepers are available
for parents to take with them during the worship service so they can be contacted
if needed.
The Kindergarten Class will meet at Collyer Center and be using the
Covenant People curriculum, which is designed to engage children in the
biblical narrative and basic Presbyterian beliefs through stories, crafts, games,
and prayer. The class will begin immediately following the children's sermon
(roughly 10:15 a.m.). Parents should walk their children across the street to
Collyer Center, or introduce their children to the designated person(s) in the
narthex who will take the children to class.
Grades One, Two, Three, Five, and Six
will meet in their designated rooms in the church building. They will be using
the curriculum entitled Covenant People. This series is designed to
engage children in the biblical narrative and introduce them to our basic beliefs
as Presbyterians while they participate in spiritual practices that connect faith
and life. Classes begin each Sunday immediately following the children's
sermon (roughly 10:15 a.m.).
Grade Four will spend the first two-thirds of the year gaining
a thematic overview of the Bible as a whole using the Covenant People
curriculum. All of the fourth graders will then receive Bibles of their own
during a special worship service in Winter/early Spring. After receiving their
Bibles, the fourth graders will spend the remainder of the year learning how to
read, use, and understand the Bible, as well as how to apply it to their
lives.
Grade Seven will be using a Bible Crossroads course
called A. D.: A Study of Church History. The primary topic of this
course is God's guiding the church from Pentecost to the present. From time
to time, they will attend worship as a class and will discuss the worship service
in class the following week.
